U.S. Army Brigadier General, baseball coach

Brig. Gen. Frederick Benteen was a popular officer with enlisted men due, in part, to his love of baseball. One of the regimental teams was named for Benteen, whose popularity rankled George Custer and proved to be a factor in the questionable decision-making Custer made that led to his infamous slaughter.
